Permanent Birth Control

If you have completed your family, you can take control with Essure®. It’s the most effective protection available to a woman against an unplanned pregnancy. The incision free placement of the tubal micro inserts takes only 15 minutes, with most women returning to regular activities the next day.

Surprisingly despite all the available methods for contraception, over half the pregnancies conceived in the United States are unplanned. Even when used correctly birth control pills fail 5% and condoms 15%, per year. Are you comfortable with this risk of having an unplanned pregnancy? If you or someone you know has completed their family and are considering a form of permanent birth control, such as tubal ligation or a partner’s vasectomy, we would like to educate you about the Essure® procedure.

The Essure® procedure is different than the traditional method of a surgical tubal ligation. With Essure® there is no cutting into the body. Instead, your doctor inserts spring-like coils, called micro-inserts, through the body’s natural pathway (vagina, cervix, and uterus) and into your fallopian tubes. Since most women only report mild cramps, you have the choice of having the procedure performed without general anesthesia. In fact, many women choose to have their Essure® performed in the convenience of our office. The doctors at Women's Health Specialists were the first to perform Essure® in our community, and serve as instructors for other doctors desiring to learn the procedure.

During the first 3 months following the procedure, your body and the micro-inserts work together to form a tissue barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the egg. During this time, you will need to use another form of birth control. Then you will have an Essure® Confirmation Test, a special type of x-ray to confirm that your tubes are completely blocked and you can rely solely on Essure® for birth control.

Unlike birth control pills, patches, rings, injections, and some forms of IUDs, Essure® does not contain hormones to interfere with your natural menstrual cycle. Your periods should more or less continue in their natural state. Clinical studies have shown Essure® to be 99.85% effective at preventing an unplanned pregnancy, surpassing traditional tubal ligation. Consequently, it is not surprising that Essure® is quickly becoming the preferred method for women seeking permanent birth control; because of less risks, discomfort, and downtime. Most women only experience mild cramps afterwards and return to their regular activities the following day.
