Women’s Health SpecialistsLet’s bring you up‐to‐date with changes at Womenʹs Health Specialists. First, Dr. Young decided to retire at the end of March. If you received a letter from Hill Physicians Medical Group rest assured we’re here to care for you. He has served the Tri‐City community for many years and we ask you to join us and wish him well in the years ahead.

We now feature an all woman obstetrician group. This is what many women in our community prefer during their childbearing years: 24/7 exclusive female attendance to their pregnancy and delivery. This distinguishes Womenʹs Health Specialists from other providers in Fremont. We are recruiting another OB to join us to better meet this need.

Womenʹs Health Specialists always strives to bring together complementary skilled gynecologists. We have doctors who are well respected for helping women regain bladder control and correct pelvic prolapse. We all practice minimally invasive “band‐aid” surgery as our preferred technique for the majority of gynecologic procedures, even some types of hysterectomy. Taking this a step further, technological advancements allow us to expand procedures we conveniently offer in our office. This includes treatments for heavy periods, urinary incontinence, and permanent birth control. These are a few examples of how we are leaders in women’s health care in the Bay Area.

Finally, we are converting to electronic medical records this summer. This will allow you to view your lab results, request medication refills, and update your medical chart online. We are also spiffing up our office and implementing an ongoing image enhancement plan to consistently deliver better service to you. Please let us know if there is anything we can do as we strive to consistently deliver compassionate, contemporary, and comprehensive care for women.

Wishing you good health!

Colon Cancer ScreeningColon cancer is 90% preventable and 90% treatable when detected early; yet it’s the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Studies reveal Americans are uncomfortable discussing the disease, underestimate their risk, and unaware they should be screened starting at age 50. Early screening can uncover polyps, which can be removed before they turn into cancer.

There are options for screening, but be mindful that women have a higher incidence of right sided colon disease. Colonoscopy, inserting a flexible scope into the rectum to examine the entire large intestine, is ideal allowing identification and removal of pre-cancerous growths and should be performed every 10 years for those with no additional risk factors. This is done under conscious sedation (twilight sleep). Alternatively you can undergo flexible sigmoidoscopy (with a shorter scope) or a special x-ray test called a double contrast barium enema every five years. These tests all require a thorough bowel prep the day beforehand to clear it of stool. Finally though not as accurate, 3 day home stool testing for blood is an option for those truly afraid of the aforementioned tests. If you have risk factors such as a family history of colon cancer you may need to begin testing earlier than 50.

So feel free to discuss colon cancer screening with your doctor at your next annual examination. You can get additional information at www.preventcancer.org/colorectal or www.cancer.org.

Colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths. Many cases are preventable, or if detected early, treatable with good long-term survival.

Wishing you good health!
